Next ISO 9004 Focuses on Putting Companies in the Black

Having spent years in the long shadow of ISO 9001, the next iteration of ISO 9004 promises to deliver something that every company and organization wants — a road map to success.

Following months of drafting, a special task group of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 176 (TC 176), which is responsible for the ISO 9000 family of documents, recently took the wraps off a third committee draft, or CD3, of the proposed next edition of the international guidance standard.

ISO 9000 Certificate Count Tops 50K in North America
QSUP Releases Big Ten Registrar Rankings

The total number of active ISO 9000 registration certificates in North America topped 52,746 as of the first quarter of 2008, according to data collected by QSU’s companion publication, the ISO 9000 Worldwide Certified Company Directory and WhosRegistered.com Global, the largest public listings of certified suppliers in the world.

The North American certificate total, which includes both accredited and unaccredited certificates issued by accredited certification bodies, represents a decline of 8,690 certificates over the same time period one year earlier. The decline is largely the result of administrative changes to the database, which were intended to improve the reliability of data.

Everything’s Coming Up Tulips; SAI Global Acquires QMI
Quality Management Institute (QMI), North America’s largest ISO 9001 certification body and second largest ISO 14001 certifier, has been sold for $40.8 million (USD) to Australia-based SAI Global Limited, according to officials from both organizations.

“This transaction delivers on the company’s strategy to build a truly global assurance business,” declares Tony Scotton, SAI Global’s chief executive in a Feb. 26 (Feb. 25 in North America) announcement. “SAI will have the largest market share in the United States, Canada, Australia and Mexico, and significant footprints in Europe and Asia.”

QSU was first to report that QMI’s parent organization, CSA Group, had been actively engaged in various stages of negotiations with a number of large firms to sell and/or merge its certification business in recent months. QSU also reported that the absence of a clear North American contender was fueling speculation that one or both of the rumored buyers — dubbed Iris and Tulip for the purposes of internal communications within CSA Group — were located in the Pacific.

The total number of active ISO 14001 registrations reported in North America has increased to 8,366 as of the first quarter of this year, according to data collected by ESU’s companion publication, the ISO 14001 Worldwide Certified Company Directory and WhosRegistered.com Global, which represent the largest public listings of certified suppliers in the world.

The North American total, which includes both accredited and unaccredited certificates issued by accredited certification bodies, experienced an increase of 693 certificates over the previous year. The gain would have been even larger had it not been for administrative changes to the database, which were intended to improve the reliability of data.
